Master of Medicine in Psychiatry

A four-year specialist training programme is offered for registrars appointed to clinical posts with the Department of Health. Candidates can write either the FCPsych(SA) Part I examination offered by the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA), or the University of Cape Town's MMed (Psychiatry) Part I examination.

In addition, all candidates must pass the FCPsych(SA) Part II examination and complete an MMed research dissertation. The documentation required in applying for the post of registrar with the Psychiatry department can be found here.

The Department is also an HPCSA registered site for the training of intern clinical psychologists.

Sub-speciality training - resulting in a Master of Philosophy degree - is offered in:

  • addiction psychiatry/psychology and
  • child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health
  • consultation-liaison psychiatry/psychology
  • forensic psychiatry/psychology
  • intellectual disability psychiatry/psychology
  • neuropsychiatry/neuropsychology
  • psychopharmacology
  • public mental health

Master of Medicine in Neuroscience

A two-year programme open to candidates from a range of backgrounds (in science, psychology, or medicine) for training in neuroscience. The degree is by dissertation, but coursework can be arranged as needed (depending on the background of the candidate). Please contact Prof. Dan Stein for additional information.

Master of Medicine in Psychiatry

A four-year training programme is offered for registrars appointed to clinical posts within the department. Candidates can write either the FRCPSA examinations, or the University of Cape Town's M Med (Psychiatry) Part I and II examinations. Candidates who also complete a dissertation are awarded the M Med (Psychiatry) degree.

The documentation required in applying for the post of registrar with the Psychiatry department can be found here. One document that needs to be completed is the z83 form.

Master of Philosophy in Addiction Psychiatry

A two-year programme for specialist psychiatrists and clinical psychologists for subspecialty career training in addiction psychiatry is offered. Please contact Dr. Don Wilson for additional information.

Master of Philosophy in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

A two-year programme for specialist psychiatrists and clinical psychologists for subspecialty career training in child and adolescent psychiatry is offered. Master of Philosophy in Liaison Psychiatry

Master of Philosophy in Forensic Psychiatry

A two-year programme providing training to general psychiatry registrars and holders of other relevant postgraduate degrees in the requirements for forensic assessments that are conducted by mental health professionals. Available also as a three-year part-time degree, this programme will consist of coursework and a dissertation. Please contact Prof. Sean Kaliski for additional information.

Master of Philosophy in Neuropsychiatry

A two-year (full time) or three-year (part-time) for specialist psychiatrists for subspecialty career training in neuropsychiatry is offered. View more details. Please contact Dr. John Joska for additional information.

Doctorate in Psychiatry

A degree by dissertation is available to psychiatrists, psychologists, and other appropriately trained individuals. Please contact Prof. Dan Stein for additional information.


Postgraduate Diplomas 

Postgraduate diplomas are offered to registered professionals in:

  • Addictions Psychiatry
  • Psychotherapy

The department also offers a clinical research fellowship in inpatient psychiatry and psychosis, an MSc Med (Neuroscience) by dissertation with course work as needed) and a PhD in Psychiatry and Mental Health (by dissertation). There are currently post-doctoral fellowships attached to the Brain-Behaviour Initiative.

Postgraduate Diploma in Psychotherapy

The primary purpose of the Diploma is to provide mental health workers with advanced training in counselling and psychotherapy. This programme involves experiential work-based learning and individual clinical supervision. .

Admission requirements

For entrance into this programme, candidates must have the following:

  • A health or mental health university degree at NQF level 7 or above
  • A professional qualification that allows candidates to work in psychiatric health settings (e.g. a degree in clinical psychology, medicine, psychiatric nursing, clinical social work, or psychiatry, BPsych)
  • Registration (or eligibility to register) with the relevant professional board (e.g. HPCSA)

Postgraduate Diploma in Addictions Care

The primary purpose of the Diploma is to provide mental health workers or persons working in the addictions field with advanced training in addictions care. This programme involves experiential work-based learning and individual clinical supervision.

  • A health or mental health university degree at NQF level 7 or above
  • A professional qualification that allows candidates to work in psychiatric health settings or in addictions in patient or outpatient settings(e.g. a degree in clinical psychology, medicine, psychiatric nursing, clinical social work,  psychiatry or BPsych)
  • Registration (or eligibility to register) with the relevant professional board (e.g. HPCSA)
